Another reason why you must vote

Here’s another reason why you must vote: our Presidents are elected by a minority of the people who are eligible to vote.

As shown in the table below, in 1980 through 2008 the winning presidential candidate received significantly less than half the votes of the eligible population.  Earlier elections had similar results.  Even in the year shown with the best turnout (62% in 2008), the winner’s percentage of the eligible voters was only 33%.  They were outnumbered by the 38% of the eligible people who didn’t vote at all that year.  In the worst turnout shown (52% in 1996), the “abstainers” outnumbered the winner’s supporters 48% to 25%.

In the past, if the “abstainers” had regained consciousness and voted as a bloc, they could have easily elected a person who wasn’t even on the ballot!  Charlton Heston?  Oprah Winfrey?  Seth MacFarlane as Peter Griffin?  Or my favorite, Mel Brooks?

Well, you get the idea—don’t forget to vote!

A magic glass of water

The Mars missions remind us that life can’t exist without water.  Here in the United States, you can easily fill your glass with safe drinking water, without giving it a second thought.  But consider the complex systems needed to make that happen.

Reservoirs and aqueducts are constructed.  Water is purified, and distributed by piping systems or bottling plants.  Infrastructure is built and operated.  Construction materials are developed and transported.  Even your drinking glass comes from a commercial system that traces back to raw materials.

All through this, there are people doing their jobs, enabled by many intricate systems.  Morning traffic is filled with those people, traveling to do their part in this harmony of activity (yeah, even the guy with his blinker on the whole way).  As part of that traffic scene, I recently saw a Highway Patrol car safely bring all lanes of a freeway to a brief stop, so a hazard could be quickly removed from the roadway.

You can depend on having your magic glass of water and all your other necessities because of successful networks that stretch beyond the horizon in all directions.  Sure, our society has many problems (much loved by the media) and we have to continue to fix those.  But we enjoy many essentials and luxuries because of systems that consistently work well.  Let’s learn from those good examples to help improve the world around us.

What can I read to help me succeed?

“What can I read to help me succeed?”  “What are some good management books?”  “Leadership books?”  I sometimes answer questions like these with the classics, such as the writings of Peter Drucker and others.  But here are a handful of interesting books that might not be on the usual leadership reading lists.

The Godfather by Mario Puzo.  No, I don’t mean that you should whack your competitors.  But look at some of the factors that go into building a formidable organization: a strong network of loyal allies, an unambiguous hierarchy of responsibility, experts in key positions, success and survival as primary goals, and dramatic incentives and consequences based on results.  “An offer he can’t refuse” can be positive as well as negative.

Gifts Differing by Isabel Briggs Myers.  Do you have situations when you think “Why are those people responding like that?  I wouldn’t do that.  Are they stupid?  Crazy?  Malicious?  Do they think I’m stupid?”  And the next thing you know, there’s a serious conflict.  Well maybe, as shown in this book, they just observe, process, analyze, and react differently than you do.  And maybe those different sets of gifts are useful and important.  We can’t see in 3D with just one eye.

What’s your point? by Bob Boylan.  Ah, a short book!  Although focused on presentations, this material is useful for a wide range of communications.  The author leads us to what the listener really wants to hear, namely: “What’s your point?  What’s in it for me?  Now what?”

How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie.  You can succeed without winning friends and influencing people.  For example, you could inherit wealth, power, and an army of top professions.  Even then, if you want to sustain that success, read this book.  One of the useful tips:  “You can make more friends in two months by becoming genuinely interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get them interested in you.”

The Great American Bathroom Book from Compact Classics.  No, I’m not kidding.  Here are short summaries of some of the best biographies, novels, business books, quotes, and many other examples of great literature.  You’re sure to find useful and interesting pieces in this, and it can be your doorway to further important readings.
It order generic viagra cute-n-tiny.com acts inside 30 to 45 minutes before intercourse and enjoy long lasting and hard erections all through intercourse. Stay in line

A large group was waiting outside the gates of Heaven.  The Attendant said to them, “Please stay in line, remain calm, and we will resolve your case soon”.

One of the men said to the fellow in front of him, “Hello, my name is Al and I was a pilot—how about you?”  The other turned and said, “Hi Al, I’m John and I used to be a doctor.”

“Hi John.  If you don’t mind my asking, how did you die?”

John answered, “Well, I froze to death.”

“Froze to death!  That must have been terrible.”

“No, it wasn’t too bad,” said John.  “At first there was the fear and the shivering, but soon I just sort of fell asleep and passed away peacefully.  How did you land up here Al?”

“Well,” said Al, “I was away from home a lot, and I was sure that my wife Alice was seeing another man.  She expected me home Thursday, but I returned Wednesday night, just to check up on her.  Sure enough, there was a strange car in front of my house.  I was in a rage.  I rushed in and screamed ‘Where is he?’  But she just looked up from her book and said ‘What are you talking about?’  Infuriated, I stormed through every room on the ground floor, frantically looking for him.  I dashed upstairs and tore apart the bedrooms and the bathrooms.  I ran down to the basement and overturned everything in sight.  Then, as I was running upstairs again to check the attic, I had a heart attack and dropped dead on the spot.”

The riddle of the two guards

Sometimes when I’m facing someone with “challenging” behavior, I ask myself if there’s anything predictable in the way that person responds.  If there is, can we use that pattern to help resolve the problem?

Consider the old riddle of the two identical guards in front of two identical doors.  The only information that you have is:

  • You must choose and enter one of the doors
  • One door leads to a wonderful experience, and the other to horrible consequences
  • You can only ask one question to only one guard, to help you with your choice
  • One of the guards always tells the truth, and the other always lies, but you don’t know which is which

Do not levitra no prescription more often than once daily, or as directed by your doctor.o If you miss a dose and you still intend to engage in sexual activity, take the Kamagra as soon as you remember. Kamagra is probably the cheapest of the three. viagra price on the other hand, cost relatively more as they are well known brands.
OK, now what can you do with that to make sure you make the right decision?  I’ll wait and listen to some interlude music while you make up your mind.

Well, in case you haven’t come up with the answer yet (or you aren’t even working on it), here’s the solution: you ask either guard what the other guard would tell you is the good door—then, whatever he answers, you choose the other door.

You’ve used the limited predictability in the situation to your advantage.

Of course, another approach might be to ignore the guards, kick open both doors, and go through the one that you like.  Who said that you have to follow absurd rules anyway?

The merry-go-round

When I was a kid, I enjoyed riding this wonderful old carousel in Coney Island.  The brightly-painted wooden horses were the work of a master carver.  The whole merry-go-round was decorated with ornate baubles and mirrors.  In the middle of it all, an elaborate band organ cheerfully tooted and thumped a spirited tune while we whirled around.

Almost beyond the reach of the outer riders was a ring dispensing arm.  If you leaned out far enough, and were agile enough as you zipped by, you could snag a ring with your index finger.  Most of the rings were iron; if you grabbed the rare brass ring, you won a free ride.

Now I occasionally find myself on a different kind of merry-go-round, one that I don’t enjoy at all.  For example, a phone call to Customer Service starts a sequence of recorded messages.  “You can visit our website for assistance with your computer!”  (But my computer isn’t working.)  “To continue in English, press 1.  For ambiguous responses in another language, press 2.”  (OK, press 1.)  “If you’re using operating system ‘A’, press 1.  If you’re using operating system ‘B’, that’s too bad.  If you can’t hear this message, press 2.  To choose from our list of on-hold music selections, press 3.”  And so forth.

After several tries and long periods on hold, I finally talk to an actual person.  After 45 minutes of “try this” and “try that”, the problem is still not solved.  Then I am told that a senior specialist will have to call me back, after the monsoon season is over.  And the agent signs off with “Thank you for choosing our product.  I will now mark your question as ‘Resolved’.”

Be like water

Recently, a very aggravating problem had me muttering to myself—”okay, wise guy, now what are you going to do?”  Then I ran into a colleague who reminded me that years ago I had advised him to “be like water”—flow and press against obstacles until they yield or until you find a way through to the other side.

Yes—I remembered.  Visualize yourself as a great mass of water, rushing and pressing up against the barrier every way that you can, applying pressure all over and continuously.  Persist until, one way or the other, you:

  • Topple it
  • Wash through it
  • Go over the top
  • Flow around it
  • Seep through it
  • Flow under it
  • Crush it
  • Dissolve it
  • Erode it
  • Move it with the flow

Call upon your energy, skills, experience, and imagination.  Tap into your reservoirs of family, friends, allies, and resources.  Use multiple methods at the same time—usually there isn’t just a single cause and one remedy for a major obstacle.  Continuously look for yield points and openings to get through, and move on.

OK.  That’s it.  Be like water.  You’ll discover ways to get through it all—and find ways to win.

The matador defense

Every week, I spend part of my time on junk emails, faxes, and phone calls.  Maybe there’s gold in my air ducts, because I get several calls a month offering to clean them.

Fortunately, I’m well protected from these annoyances by the CAN-SPAM Act, the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, the Do-Not-Call Improvement Act, and other fearsome regulations.  Well, maybe I’m not so well protected after all—in spite of years of trying, the agencies and commissions responsible for enforcement do not seem to be able to stop this flood of junk, spam, spoofing, and scams.

In basketball, the commentators refer to this sort of thing as “the matador defense”.  That’s when players don’t really bother to stop their opponents from scoring, but just sort of wave at them as they go by.

Unfortunately, there are problems in our protection systems that are far more serious than junk emails and calls.  Consider the financial ruin caused by fraud that goes undetected for years, the injuries and deaths caused by seriously flawed products and services, and the vicious crimes committed by repeat offenders.  The regulators and enforcers responsible for these areas would argue that things would be a lot worse without their efforts.  Perhaps.  But that’s of little consolation to the victims.

Kamagrarx.com offers levitra uk at cheap rates because, they invest a pretty negligible share of their profits on the advertising branding and promotional activities; they rather benefit the customers by offering them these drugs at low.Kamagra jellies are the most popular drugs recently has been levitra. How to learn

An ordinary knot becomes an all-star when it takes care of an important need and is easy to tie and untie.  An excellent example is the knot for tying your shoes.  It does a great job, and when you learned how to tie it, you took your second early step toward total independence.  The first was learning how to use toilet paper.

As we learned more complex things that were important for our comfort, safety and success, it became essential to do them quickly and correctly.  Think about learning to drive and initially struggling to stay in your lane.

So how do we learn something so well that we can do it almost automatically and do it right every time?  You’ve probably seen the expression:

  • Tell me, and I will forget
  • Show me, and I will remember

A large number of men are unable to satisfy the sexual need buy cialis canada browse around for source of himself and his partner. Veterans Day levitra side effects is such a day. Moreover, supplements sold on internet that claim to lowest price on levitra enhance your sexual desire. Precautions: Heart issues, for example, midsection torment (angina), heart disappointment, unpredictable heartbeats, or have shown some levitra 60 mg kindness assault High or low blood pressure level or any problem exist in blood cells.
Well I think that knowing how to do something really well goes beyond just remembering.  For example, think about your ability to play your favorite sport, or express yourself artistically.  So, I expanded the thought as follows:

  • Tell me, and I will forget
  • Show me, and I will remember
  • Involve me, and I will understand
  • Give me practice and feedback, and I will know how
  • Let me do it and teach it, and I will excel

If we’re learning or teaching something that’s really important to our personal lives or our organizations, we have to take it all the way through the steps needed to get full value.  You can tie a string around your finger to remind you of something, but “yeah, I remember that” doesn’t count unless you can actually do it well.

Help them succeed

My favorite question, when looking at a specific business activity, is “why are you doing this?”  A powerful answer is “to help our customers succeed”.

Finding good answers to “how do we help them succeed?” provides high value to our customers and encourages their support.  And when they thrive, they continue to buy our products and services.  It also helps keep our area of business healthy, and contributes to the vitality of the whole economy.  Presto!  We just saved the world!

Well, maybe not.  But the value of “help them succeed” goes well beyond benefits to business customers.  Here are some examples:

  1. Within our companies and nonprofit organizations.  All organizations have internal customers (owners, patrons, bosses, colleagues, subordinates, etc.).  By supporting their success, we can enjoy greater cooperation and innovation, and increase the strength of our team.
  2. In our homes and our schools.  When we focus on our young people’s success in the broadest sense, we help prepare them to be happy, healthy, and harmonious members of society.  We can support that goal by providing them with excellent role models and showing them how to deal with real-life situations.
  3. In public service and safety.  Imagine:
    • Law enforcement successes that keep bad guys off the street, and also help people stay out of trouble and contribute to society instead of harming it.
    • Regulatory agency successes that assure public protection, without stifling innovation and commerce.
    • Health care successes that help people stay physically and mentally vigorous through healthy life styles and prevention, without dangerous side effects.
